Hiking Tour from Longyearbyen to Grønfjorden

Join us on a unique 5-day hiking tour through Svalbard’s wilderness, from Longyearbyen to Grønfjorden/Barentsburg. Experience breathtaking nature, fascinating history, and possibly Arctic wildlife, while witnessing a spectacular natural phenomenon: on August 12, the moon will pass between the Earth and the Sun, covering 90% of the sunlight – right in Svalbard’s untouched wilderness, far from city lights and noise.

Adventure Day by Day

Day 1 – Bjørndalen to Fuglefjella & Grønberget:

We start in Bjørndalen and ascend Fuglefjella and Grønberget (approx. 500 m), with panoramic views over Isfjorden. The first camp is set up here, allowing time to enjoy the scenery and the peace of nature.

Day 2 – Colesbay:

We hike toward the old Russian mining town of Colesbay and establish Camp 2 in a scenic area surrounded by historical traces of Svalbard’s mining past.

Day 3 – Colesdalen to Kapp Laila:

We cross Colesdalen and follow Isfjorden toward Kapp Laila. Spectacular views of Isfjorden await before we set up camp slightly above the fjord, surrounded by dramatic Arctic landscapes.

Day 4 – Hollendarbukta:

The hike continues along the fjord toward Hollendarbukta. We take our time to enjoy views of glaciers and the Greenland Sea – the final camp before the journey’s end.

Day 5 – Heerodden to Barentsburg:

The last stage rounds Heerodden and ends in the Russian mining town of Barentsburg, where we are picked up by boat and return to Longyearbyen.

Safety and Guided Tour

Our experienced guides ensure safety throughout the tour, with polar bear deterrents and nighttime polar bear watch, which all participants share. The tour is suitable for most people in reasonably good physical condition and covers approximately 60 km.

Tips: Bring a pair of well-used shoes for crossing small rivers and muddy areas.

What’s Included

• Food: Fruit muesli, freeze-dried meals for dinner, polar bread, spreads, blackcurrant drink, trail mix, chocolate, coffee.
• Equipment: Tent, sleeping bag, thermos, multifuel stove with fuel, pots, boat transport.

Not included: Flights, personal gear, sleeping pad (inflatable recommended), sunscreen, sunglasses, swimwear, large water bottle, large backpack (80+ liters).
